Et Ceteras Marketing & Branding Journey
It's been thrilling to not only start an event planning company, a lifelong dream of mine, but to be able to work on the marketing and branding of Et Cetera. I've decided that although our legal name is Et Cetera Event Company, LLC, we will also go by Et Cetera and Etc & Co. I hope that when you search for us, it's easy and produces results no matter what the search term!
When I was in eighth grade and first dreamt of this company I someday wanted to have, I wondered what the name would be. For years, I came up with terrible ideas, none of them stuck and none of them sounded classy, timeless but also relevant and intriguing. When I was sixteen, and got my license, my father and I visited Providence Rhode Island, where he worked, in search of the perfect keychain. We looked in almost a dozen stores. None of the keychains we found really jumped out at me, and there weren't many that I fell in love with. Upon my frustration, my dad said "Jerica, you'll know it when you see it.". Shortly after, we walked into the Brown University bookstore and I found a beautiful keychain that I instantly fell in love with. Since then, I have used that motto in life, and believed that when I came across the right name, I would "know it when I heard it.".
I started et cetera event company, kind of-sort of, in February of 2014. In an effort to spend my free time doing more of what I love, I created a website, and a bunch of social media accounts and unofficially started my side-biz as a "freelance event planner". Unexpectedly, it was more successful than I thought it would be and that summer, I had four weddings booked!
When thinking of the name for the company I am so happy to call mine, the inspiration derived from a very bizarre, very old story my parents used to tell me. Brace yourselves.
Instead of explaining the birds and the bees to me, my parents told me that I was a princess on a planet far away. Princess Jerabella to be exact. My parents names, we King Asterisk and Queen Ampersand (I think this was my mothers attempt to stress proper grammar from the beginning). As the story goes, one day, while my parents were living in Dallas, Texas, the news of an asteroid heading towards earth. As the news footage continued it was getting closer to the United States, then closer to Texas, and then heading straight for out little home in Dallas. My dad ran outside with a pillow, and caught me right out of the air, and that's how I came to be. My mom even went so far as to draw a scene from my "home planet" on my childhood desk, with King Asterisk and Queen Ampersand proudly on the front. She was very creative.
It was important to me to have either an asterisk or an ampersand incorporated into the name of my company in some form. As I thought about what else lived in that family, "etc" popped into my head.
For me, et cetera meant that there was something more to come, something else to be said. The story wasn't over. And so, Etc & Co was born. I loved the way et cetera sounded, and I got to incorporate an ampersand into my logo.
I know I previously blogged about our brand concept. After many revisions and hours of work with my great friend, and trusty designer, Eric Pollock, we agreed on a logo we both loved. I'm so obsessed with my logo I want to put it on everything! I couldn't have imagined something that spoke to our brand more perfectly. Simple, classic, timeless, refined, beautiful and perfectly tailored.
It's been an amazing journey, and I hope you'll join me and my team as embark on this adventure of entrepreneurship, making a name for ourselves in the event industry in Vermont and continuing to tackle the branding and marketing of Etc & Co!
